Sustainable Landscape Design

Sustainable design means designing with nature, not in spite of it. A careful eye toward existing conditions and potential issues such as drainage, rainfall, and exposures ensures a lasting design that uses a minimum of resources and helps, rather than stresses, our environment. Our mantra is 'the right plant in the right place.'

Here in the greater DC area, we are blessed with conditions that allow a lovely garden all year long. Your garden should be interesting in January as well as in July. Using natural elements such as bark, berries, form, foliage, and bloom, as well as hardscape, pots, stonework, and sculpture, we will transform your garden to delight you in every month.

Native Plants and Pollinators

Our natural landscape is disappearing, stressing bees, butterflies, and other beneficial creatures. Using native plants helps to restore this balance. We aim for at least one-third of the plants in our designs to be of native origin, and often the native component is well over one-half. We can also design specialty gardens to attract bees and hummingbirds.

Garden Coaching, Plant Identification and Care

If you've bought a new home with an established garden or plantings, or are a beginning gardener, you can use some expert help. We can identify your plants and how to care for them, and can even teach you to do the work yourself (it's great exercise!). Our 'Roadmap Consultation' is one of our most popular services and makes a great gift for new homeowners.

 Pots, Staging, and Custom Pruning

For houses going on the market, curb appeal is of utmost importance. We work with homeowners and Realtors to spruce up your front yard and make your entrance ready for potential buyers. And whether you're selling your house or staying put, we can help create gorgeous seasonal pots. Finally, don't let your yard crew prune your beloved shrubs - we are experts who know when and how to prune for best bloom, structure, and health.

Solutions

In parts of greater DC, the deer population has exploded. Deer can wreak havoc in a garden and ruin all of your hard work. We have battled deer for a decade, and have developed techniques that will foil Bambi and his friends. We know which plants deer avoid. We also give presentations on gardening with deer to garden clubs and citizens groups. Contact us for more information.
